Heat Smarter This Winter
Posted by Navdip Gahir on 13th Oct 2025
Winter is inching closer and with it come blankets, jumpers and thick socks.
Of course, increased bills are also a guarantee during the colder months, as we’re spending more on heating.
This can be a cause for concern for some people, however, infrared can go a long way to alleviate this. There are a few ways that IR heaters make your life a lot easier during winter months, so let’s take a look at some of these in a bit more detail.
Direct, Faster Heat
Picture this - you come home after a long day out at work, with friends, or wherever, and the house is cold. Bone-chillingly cold.
The first, almost instinctive thing to do, would be to turn on the heating.
But there’s the long agonising wait for the room to actually get warm, because radiators take ages to fill your spaces with heat.
Infrared doesn’t give you that same delay, because it is a far more direct type of heat that heats you. So rather than waiting 30-45 minutes for your space to get warm, you’re waiting a far more reasonable 10-15 minutes instead.
Handy if you want to feel warm straightaway.
Smart Out Of The Box
Granted not all of our infrared heaters are smart enabled out of the box - however our Nexus Wi-Fi Panels and a huge number of our Bar Heaters are equipped with Wi-Fi from the get go.
Opting for these models gives you all the convenience of distance control and automations. Crucially though for winter, is that smart enabled IR heaters allow you to switch your heating on before you get home - almost making the previous point redundant about fast warm up times.
20 minutes before you get home, simply get your phone out and pop your heating on.
And all from heaters that don’t need any additional wiring to get them online - they already come with Wi-Fi out of the box.
This is before you set up your automations, and set your heaters to behave exactly how you want without you even having to lift a finger.
Want your heating to come on when the temperature outside drops below 10 degrees? Done.
How about connecting your garage heater to a sensor so that it automatically switches on when you enter the room? 100% possible.
Reduced Risk
Infrared generally tends to be decentralised - though it doesn’t have to be, you can wire them all to a single thermostat, but given that many panels and bar heaters come with built-in controls, it's not necessary to do so.
This decentralised nature lends itself well to reliability in the winter.
You see, if your boiler breaks down when it’s minus three outside, you’re going to have a bit of a problem. It won’t be able to supply hot water to your radiators, you’ll be freezing cold, and you’ll be facing a several thousand pound bill to call out a plumber to repair or replace it.
With infrared however, each heater is independent of the other. If one breaks down, the others will still work. And you’re not looking at a small mortgage to repair it either - simply replace the single panel and that’s it.
And that’s before we consider that the likelihood of your panel breaking down is incredibly low, because IR heaters have no moving parts.
It’s one thing to have faster and smarter heat, but it’s a totally different level of comfort to know that the risk of your heating breaking in winter is massively reduced.
Plain Old Lower Bills
Above all else though, is that infrared uses less energy than convection heaters do. For the plain reason that they simply have less to heat.
Convection heaters warm the air, of which there is a lot.
Infrared heaters warm objects, of which there is a lot less.
Now if you’re comparing the costs of infrared vs electric convection, there is no contest. Infrared uses up to 60% less energy. There’s simply no way to bridge that gap.
If you are coming from gas powered convection heaters though, the energy savings will most likely balance out with the unit cost of electricity vs gas.
However you would still benefit from all the other advantages that we’ve discussed, like faster warm up time, easy smart heating and reduced risk of breakdowns in the winter.
