IR Heating For Garden Rooms

IR Heating For Garden Rooms

Posted by Navdip Gahir on 17th Sep 2025

One of the most popular home improvement projects in recent years is garden rooms, or otherwise known as outhouses. And it’s not difficult to see why.

Using the garden space to create additional living space (in a country that is otherwise known for having lots of rain) is a smart way to use the land that comes with your property.

The challenge many people face however is keeping them warm, as they almost always have 4 exterior facing walls. It might not surprise you to hear though, that infrared heating is a very good and highly efficient way of heating your garden room.

Let’s go through some options and figure out which type of heater is best for your garden room.

IR Bar Heaters

Our slim and powerful infrared bar heaters would be our starting point for heating a space like this.

For a start, they come in multiple sizes and wattages, starting at 1.2kW and going up to 3kW for some serious heat. If you do find that this is too much, then it is worth knowing that our remote Wi-Fi models can be switched to half power - ideal for maintaining your temperatures.

Once you’ve gone through the easy install, they beam out tremendous amounts of heat, plenty for the typical size of a garden room.

Perhaps the most important advantage these heaters will give you is fast and efficient heat - perfect for spaces that aren’t being used all the time.

IR Panel Heaters

If your outhouse is on the smaller side, very well insulated or in use regularly throughout the day (many people use outhouses as offices since the pandemic in 2020), then IR panel heaters might be a good option too.

The wattage options aren’t quite as high as the bar heaters, starting at 180W and going up to 1200W, and as a result the warm up times won’t quite be as fast. However, this is what makes them better suited to spaces that need a gentler onset of warmth.

You’ve also got a bit more option here regarding control. The classic panels provide a simple on/off type of heater, whilst our NXT Gen panels come with built-in thermostats and remote controls out of the box.

The best all round option though is our Nexus Wi-Fi range, giving you distance control from your smartphone, allowing the use of automations, and Alexa and Google Assistant. So if you do have an office in your garden room, you could simply tell Alexa or Google to switch your heater on in the morning when you get up, so that your space is nice and warm by the time you start work.

IR Patio Heaters

You may also have a garden room that is open on some, or all sides - more akin to a pergola than an actual room.

Either way, if you have any kind of draft coming in, then you need to forget the bar heaters and panels, and go for an IR patio heater instead.

The reason for this is simple - our patio heaters use near infrared, which utilises a much shorter wavelength compared to our standard heaters. In English, this means that the heat is near instant, taking just a few seconds, and it’s a far more intense warmth too, that can pierce through cold air pretty easily.

For added safety, the patio heaters are IP65 rated, so you don’t even need to worry about rain or any other adverse weather conditions.
