5 Signs It’s Time To Rethink Your Heating

5 Signs It’s Time To Rethink Your Heating

Posted by Navdip Gahir on 4th Aug 2025

You don’t really think about heating a lot of the time…unless it’s winter, and the price of energy has just spiked…again.

If it isn’t that, then it might be the radiators rattling, the cold spots in your home, or the dreaded boiler warning lights.

Whichever way it comes, there are usually clear warning signs that your current system just isn’t fit for purpose anymore.

However, we’re going to aim to identify what those signs are, whether you need to upgrade, and what to look for next.

Sign #1: Your Bills Are Creeping Up

It’s no secret to anyone who is a bill payer, or who has been watching the news over the past few years, that energy prices are climbing. And crucially, they show no sign of getting any lower.

What compounds this problem is an inefficient heating system.

Old boilers are nowhere near as efficient as newer, like-for-like systems, and clogged up radiators will slow down warm up times, which wastes money.

The solution is a modern, energy-efficient alternative. A new boiler is an option, but is costly for something that is being phased out. Heat pumps are also an incredibly efficient choice, but are even costlier than boilers, coming in at a minimum of 5 figures!

Our choice (naturally) would be infrared heating, as it is incredibly efficient without the massive up front cost. You can also use them with solar panels, giving you heavily reduced, or even free heating.

IR Panel Heaters offer a great entry point into low cost heating using infrared.

Sign #2: Uneven Heating Around The Home

If you’ve ever walked through your home in the winter and found some rooms to be boiling, and others freezing, then you’ve most likely got a distribution issue.

This is actually more common than you think, and is most often caused by older central heating systems, and/or poorly placed radiators.

The problem of course is the hassle involved with moving a radiator - first your carpet or hard floor has to come out, then the floorboards, then the plumber has to come and move your pipes, before the radiator is finally moved and it’s all stitched back together.

And don’t get us started on the gunk that will come out of your radiator when it’s disconnected. Yuck.

Infrared is an easy way to get round this, as IR by nature is zonal. And when our team quote up your space, they’ll ensure you get a good spread of heat in every room.

If you do have cold spots and just want to plug that area, our Portable IR Panels are brilliant for this.

Sign #3: Constant Maintenance or Repairs

The list of things that can go wrong with wet heating systems is too much for this page here, but some of the highlights include servicing, leaking pipes, faulty boiler parts, and radiators that constantly need bleeding.

If you’re not careful, this can very quickly turn into a money pit, because there are so many moving parts involved.

What you want is a zero maintenance system without any moving parts…like infrared. You simply install them, and forget them. It’s as easy as that. No maintenance, and not a lot to go wrong.

Better yet is that as IR is essentially modular, if one heater does happen to go wrong, it won’t stop the rest of the house working as normal - simply repair or replace the problem unit and off you go!

We're so confident in the longevity and hassle-free nature of our heaters, that we also offer Custom Image IR Panels that can have your images printed on them. If we thought they were going to break after a few years, the last thing we'd do is immortalise your most treasured moments on an IR panel!

Sign #4: Your Heating Takes Forever To Warm Up

Gas central heating is notorious for its long warm up time. This means you’re paying for heat that simply isn’t there, and a lot of this is down to how central heating works.

Your boiler consumes gas energy to heat your water supply, which is then pumped round your house into your radiators, which then warms your room up.

This is a long and inefficient process, as there are so many ways along that journey where energy can be lost, for example to sound energy and kinetic energy.

Infrared starts making you feel warm within 10-15 minutes, and because it’s direct, it’ll warm you up so much faster. This actually becomes a matter of seconds with our Athena and Theia IR Bar Heaters thanks to their near infrared heat.

Sign #5: Your Home Still Feels Cold

It’s winter, the heating is on and you’re finally starting to feel warm.

But in comes someone who just opened a door and now all that cosy heat has gone, lost to a cold draught that lasted all of 5 seconds.

We’ve all been there, and we’ve all been frustrated by this too.

The problem is that convection heat warms the air, which can be lost in an instant, as it escapes quickly.

Radiant heat, like the kind emitted by infrared, stays with you. Opening a door has little impact on your comfort levels because it’s direct. Combine this with modern levels of insulation, and suddenly, cold homes are a thing of the past.

IR Bar Heaters are our most powerful indoor heaters, and are pretty much immune to all the issues described above.

Is It Time To Change Heating System?

Whether you opt for a new heating system or not really depends on how much the factors above matter to you. Generally speaking, if the following are a big issue for you:

  • Bills getting more expensive,
  • Uneven heat distribution in your home,
  • Never ending maintenance and repairs,
  • Slow warm up times,
  • Cold rooms…

Then it might be an idea to switch to something more affordable, fully customisable, maintenance free, quick to work and most importantly, has warmth in abundance.

Luckily, infrared ticks all those boxes, and upgrading is easier than you think, with low up front cost, installation in a single day, and expert advice on hand from us.
